Web Content Accesibility Guidelines

W3C Standard 6, Guideline 1

This guideline talks about how some people in the world need alternative ways to be able to have an equivalent to images, movies, sounds and other items. A number of pages use these media methods and have to remember that not all audiences have the ability to view them as a normal individual might. This guideline puts into perspective how important alternatives to these other medias are important.

An alternatives to images, movies, sounds and other media sources is a text-equivalent of the media being displayed. When a site uses pictures on a page, put a text description that would describe the picture, or if a site uses a song or movie, put the text to the words or a short description of the meaning of each. Visual objects are great for some individuals, but one cannot alienate others for not having good alternatives if they cannot view the normal page content.

A good example of a site that needs to update its accesibility alternatives is: UPS.com. This site is a very well known company and I'm sure has many different audiences that use it. It includes a variety of pictures, buttons, and links that would be very difficult for a blind person to navigate their page. Without alternative texts, a disabled person could not effectively use this site. I feel UPS.com should seriously update their ability to serve disabled persons by including more alternatives to auditor and visual content.
